What the Free Online Text & Data Converter does

The Data Converter turns structured text from one format into another: JSON, XML, CSV, TSV, YAML, TOML, INI, .env, NDJSON, SQL INSERT statements, Markdown, HTML, Base64 and more, plus real Excel, Word, PDF and RTF files as output. Pick a source and a target format, paste or upload your data and click Convert.

Nested data is handled the way each target expects it: nested objects become flattened columns in CSV and Excel, repeated elements in XML, and indented blocks in YAML. Every row, key and value is kept, so you can convert back and forth without losing data.

When to use it

  • An API returns JSON but a colleague needs the same records in a spreadsheet: convert to CSV or Excel.
  • Moving configuration between tools that disagree on format, for example a JSON settings object that has to become YAML for Docker Compose or Kubernetes.
  • Checking what a file really contains before you import it: the Check & Suggest Fix button reports the first syntax error with its line and column.
  • Turning a database dump into usable data with the SQL (INSERT Statements) to JSON Converter pages, or the other way around.

Worked example

Input

[
  {"id": 1, "name": "Ana", "city": "Lisbon"},
  {"id": 2, "name": "Ben", "city": "Oslo"}
]

Output

- id: 1
  name: Ana
  city: Lisbon
- id: 2
  name: Ben
  city: Oslo

Common questions about the Free Online Text & Data Converter

Which formats can it read and write?

It reads JSON, XML, CSV, TSV, YAML, TOML, INI, .env, NDJSON, SQL INSERT statements, Markdown, HTML, RTF, Base64, URL-encoded text, JWT tokens and Excel or Word files. It writes all the text formats plus downloadable .xlsx, .docx, .pdf and .rtf files and an SVG image of the data.

Is my data stored?

No. The text is sent to the converter over HTTPS, converted in memory and returned in the same response. It is not saved to a database or file, and no account is needed.

How large can the input be?

Up to 5 MB of text per conversion, which is tens of thousands of typical records. Split larger exports into several parts and convert them one after another.
