What the YAML to CSV Converter does
The YAML to CSV Converter turns a YAML list of records into CSV rows that open directly in a spreadsheet. Each item in the list becomes a row, and each key becomes a column.
Nested keys are flattened into underscore-joined column names, so meta: {tier: frontend} becomes a meta_tier column. Columns are collected from every record, so an item that has an extra key still gets its own column instead of being cut off.
When to use it
- An inventory, service catalog or test-case list is kept in YAML, and someone needs to review it in Excel.
- Exporting data from a static-site generator, Ansible inventory or CI configuration into a table for a report.
- Comparing many YAML records side by side, which is much easier in columns than in nested text.
- Sharing a list of feature flags, routes or translations with a non-technical teammate who prefers a table.
Worked example
Input
- name: web
port: 8080
meta:
tier: frontend
- name: api
port: 3000
meta:
tier: backend
Output
name,port,meta_tier
web,8080,frontend
api,3000,backendCommon questions about the YAML to CSV Converter
What YAML structure does it expect?
A list of mappings at the top level (lines starting with - and key: value pairs) works best. A single mapping becomes one row; check indentation first with the YAML Validator if the result looks wrong.
How are lists inside a record handled?
A list of simple values is joined into one cell. A list of objects is flattened like any other nested data, so complex documents can produce many columns.
Are anchors and aliases supported?
Yes. YAML anchors (&name) and aliases (*name) are resolved while the file is parsed, so the CSV contains the expanded values rather than the reference markers.
