How to encode text as Base64

Encode text as Base64 instantly: type or paste text and the Base64 version appears as you type. Text is handled as UTF-8, so accents, emoji and every script work.

  1. Type or paste your input, such as Hello, World!, into the box above.
  2. The result appears right away: Hello, World! becomes SGVsbG8sIFdvcmxkIQ==.
  3. Copy the result, or choose from 30 encodings in the From and To boxes.

How Base64 works

Base64 takes the text's UTF-8 bytes three at a time (24 bits) and splits them into four groups of 6 bits. Each group is one of 64 characters. When the number of bytes is not a multiple of three, = signs pad the end.

Text and Base64 explained

Plain text is read and written as UTF-8, so accents, emoji and every writing system are supported.

Base64 writes any data with 64 safe characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, + and /). It is used in email attachments, data: URLs, JSON Web Tokens and HTTP Basic authentication.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 a form of encryption?

No. It only changes how the data is written, and anyone can reverse it without a key. Never use it to hide passwords or secrets.

Which character set is used?

UTF-8, the standard of the web. Accents, emoji and non-Latin scripts are encoded as their UTF-8 bytes and decoded back exactly.

Why does decoding give an error?

The input is not valid for the chosen encoding: a missing or extra character, a line break in the middle, or text that was encoded differently. Check that you copied the whole value.
