How to generate SHA-1 hashes
Generate the SHA-1 hash of any text instantly: type or paste text and the SHA-1 digest appears as you type, in lowercase hex, uppercase hex or Base64.
- Type or paste your text into the box above.
- The SHA-1 hash appears right away: the SHA-1 of hello is aaf4c61ddcc5e8a2dabede0f3b482cd9aea9434d.
- Copy the hash, or switch between 17 algorithms and three output formats.
Is SHA-1 secure?
SHA-1 is no longer secure: practical collisions have been published since 2017. Use SHA-256 for anything security-related.

What is SHA-1?
SHA-1 produces a 160-bit hash, shown as 40 hex characters. Git uses it to name commits.
Frequently asked questions
Can SHA-1 hashes be reversed?
No. A hash is a one-way function: it can't be turned back into the text. Short, common inputs can still be found in lookup tables, which is why a plain hash must never store passwords.
Why does changing one letter change the whole hash?
Hash functions are designed so that any change to the input, even one bit, produces a completely different result. That makes them good for detecting changes.
Does the text encoding matter?
Yes. The hash is computed from the UTF-8 bytes of the text. Other tools that use a different encoding or add a line break at the end will give a different hash.
