What the JSON Formatter does
The JSON Formatter takes minified or messy JSON and rewrites it with consistent two-space indentation, one key per line, so you can read the structure at a glance. It does not change your data: keys, values and their order stay exactly as they were.
There are two ways to format. Convert sends the input to the server and puts the formatted JSON in the Output panel. The Pretty button on the Input panel reformats the text in place, and Minify does the reverse. If the JSON is broken, Check & Suggest Fix points to the line and column of the problem.
When to use it
- Reading an API response that arrives as a single long line.
- Reviewing a config file or fixture before committing it.
- Pasting JSON into a ticket, email or documentation, where indentation makes it readable.
- Comparing two payloads: format both first, then use the Text Diff Checker.

Does formatting change my data?
No. Only whitespace changes. Key order, values and types stay the same, so the formatted JSON parses to exactly the same object.
How do I make JSON compact again?
Use the Minify button, or the JSON Minifier if you want a dedicated page. Minifying removes all whitespace that is not inside a string.
Why does the formatter reject my JSON?
Formatting needs valid JSON. Common causes are a trailing comma, single quotes or unquoted keys. The JSON Validator shows the exact line and column.
