What the CSV Validator does
The CSV Validator parses your file the same way the converter does and reports rows that do not fit the header: missing fields, extra fields and unterminated quotes, with the line number of the first problem.
It detects comma and semicolon delimiters automatically and understands quoted fields, so a comma or a line break inside "quotes" is treated as data, not as a new column or row. Blank lines at the end of the file are not treated as errors.
When to use it
- Before importing a file into a database, CRM or script, so a malformed row does not stop the import halfway.
- Checking an export from Excel or another system that produced unexpected columns.
- Confirming a file is clean before converting it with the CSV to JSON Converter or the CSV to Excel (XLSX) Converter.
- Finding the one row in a large export that has an extra comma or an unclosed quote.
Worked example
Input
name,age,city
Ana,30,Lisbon
Ben,25
Cara,41,"Porto"
Output
Too few fields: expected 3 fields but parsed 2 (Line 3)
Suggestion: Make sure every row has the same number of columns as the header row, and that any field containing a comma or quote is wrapped in double quotes.Common questions about the CSV Validator
What does 'Too few fields' mean?
A row has fewer values than the header has columns, usually because a value is missing at the end or a comma was dropped. The message gives the line so you can add the empty field.
How do I include a comma inside a value?
Wrap the whole value in double quotes, like "Lisbon, Portugal". To include a double quote inside a quoted value, write it twice: "".
Does it check data types or required values?
No. It checks structure only: that every row lines up with the header and that quoting is correct. Business rules such as valid dates or unique IDs need to be checked in your own tool.
