How to generate SHA-256 hashes
Generate the SHA-256 hash of any text instantly: type or paste text and the SHA-256 digest appears as you type, in lowercase hex, uppercase hex or Base64.
- Type or paste your text into the box above.
- The SHA-256 hash appears right away: the SHA-256 of hello is 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824.
- Copy the hash, or switch between 17 algorithms and three output formats.
Is SHA-256 secure?
SHA-256 is secure and the standard choice today. For passwords, use a slow password hash such as bcrypt or Argon2 instead of any plain hash.

What is SHA-256?
SHA-256, part of the SHA-2 family, produces a 256-bit hash, shown as 64 hex characters. It secures TLS certificates, Bitcoin and software downloads.
Frequently asked questions
Can SHA-256 hashes be reversed?
No. A hash is a one-way function: it can't be turned back into the text. Short, common inputs can still be found in lookup tables, which is why a plain hash must never store passwords.
Why does changing one letter change the whole hash?
Hash functions are designed so that any change to the input, even one bit, produces a completely different result. That makes them good for detecting changes.
Does the text encoding matter?
Yes. The hash is computed from the UTF-8 bytes of the text. Other tools that use a different encoding or add a line break at the end will give a different hash.
