Which format should I pick?

PNG

Lossless, keeps transparency. Best for screenshots, logos and images with text.

JPG

Small files for photos. No transparency; transparent areas get the background color you choose.

WebP

Usually 25–35% smaller than JPG or PNG at the same quality, with transparency. Supported by every current browser.

AVIF

Even smaller than WebP. Offered only when your browser can create it.

GIF

Limited to 256 colors with on/off transparency. Use it for simple graphics or where GIF is required.

ICO

Icons for Windows and website favicons. One file can hold several sizes; non-square images are centered on a transparent square.

PDF

A one-page PDF with the image on it, sized to the image. Handy for sending or printing a scan or a photo.

SVG

Wraps the image in an SVG file for places that only accept SVG. The picture stays pixels; it is not traced into vector shapes.

ICNS / TGA

ICNS holds macOS app icons in every size up to 1024 px. TGA is used for game and 3D textures.

BMP / TIFF

Uncompressed, so files are large. Choose them for older software, printing or archiving.

It also opens TIFF, Photoshop PSD (the flattened image), TGA and PBM/PGM/PPM files, which browsers cannot show on their own.

Your image stays on your device

The conversion runs in your browser with its built-in image engine, so the file is never uploaded to 4Dev or anywhere else. Camera details and GPS location stored in the original are not copied into the result. Very large images are limited to 20 MB and 50 megapixels so the page stays responsive on phones.
