HEIC to JPG: make iPhone photos open everywhere
iPhones save photos as HEIC to use about half the space of JPG at the same quality. Many computers, Android phones and websites still can't open HEIC, which is why uploads fail or show a blank preview. Converting to JPG gives you a photo that opens on every device and website.
Key facts
- HEIC (HEIF) is the default iPhone and iPad photo format since iOS 11.
- A JPG is usually about twice the size of the same HEIC photo, with no visible difference.
- Select many photos at once and get them all back in one ZIP.
- Location and camera details stored in the HEIC are left out of the JPG, so you can share it more safely.
Where each format plays

| Android phones | Some models | Yes |

Why convert HEIC to JPG?
HEIC (HEIF) is the format iPhones and iPads save photos in by default. It keeps high quality at about half the size of JPG, but Windows, Android and many websites can't open it without extra software.
JPG (JPEG) is the classic format for photos. Its lossy compression keeps files small, but it has no transparency and slightly softens sharp edges and text.
Choose JPG when the image is a photo and a small file that opens everywhere matters most.
HEIC and JPG at a glance
| Format | HEIC | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Image | Image |
| Compression | Lossy | Lossy |
| Transparency | Yes | No |
| Animation | No | No |
| Best for | iPhone photos at half the size of JPG | small photos that open on every device |
| Opens in | Apple devices; fewer apps elsewhere | Every device and app |
Good to know
- HEIC photos are decoded right in your browser: Safari opens them directly, other browsers first load a small decoder (about 1 MB). The photo is never uploaded.
- JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas get a background color. White is the default; you can pick any other color.
Questions about converting HEIC to JPG
Why can't I open iPhone photos on my computer?
iPhones save photos as HEIC, a newer format that many computers and photo viewers don't support. Convert them here to JPG and they open everywhere.
Can I convert many HEIC photos at once?
Yes. Select or drop all of them together; they are converted in one go and you get a single ZIP with every JPG.
Will the JPG look worse than the HEIC?
At the default quality you won't see a difference. The JPG file is simply larger, because JPG compresses less efficiently than HEIC.
Is the HEIC to JPG converter free?
Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Your browser reads and converts the file on your own device; nothing is sent to 4Dev or anyone else.
Is there a size limit?
Images can be up to 20 MB and 50 megapixels, which covers photos from every current phone and camera.
Will converting to JPG reduce quality?
JPG is lossy, but at the default quality the difference is hard to see. Move the quality slider up for a sharper result or down for a smaller file.
