What the Random String Generator does
The Random String Generator creates a random string from the character groups you choose: lowercase, UPPERCASE, digits (0-9) and symbols. Set any length from 1 to 256 characters (16 by default). Lowercase, uppercase and digits are on when the page opens, which gives an alphanumeric string that is safe in URLs and file names.
Characters are drawn with crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's secure random source, so the output is suitable for secrets. The string is generated on your device and never sent anywhere. With the three default groups there are 62 possible characters, so each character adds almost 6 bits of randomness and a 32-character string has about 190 bits.
When to use it
- Creating an API key, a webhook secret or a session secret for an app's config.
- Generating unique voucher or invite codes.
- Producing test IDs and fixture values that must not collide.
- Creating a random salt or nonce while prototyping.

How long should a secret key be?
32 alphanumeric characters (about 190 bits) is plenty for API keys and signing secrets. Longer strings add safety margin but rarely matter in practice.
Which symbols are included?
!@#$%^&*()-_=+[]{}. Leave symbols off for anything that goes into a URL, a shell command or an environment file, where some of them need escaping.
How is this different from a UUID?
A UUID has a fixed format and length (36 characters, 122 random bits). A random string lets you choose the length and alphabet, for example a short 8-character code. See the UUID Generator when you need a standard ID.
Can I generate many strings at once?
Each click creates one string. For a batch of unique IDs, the UUID Generator produces up to 100 at a time.
