What the Markdown Table Generator does

The Markdown Table Generator gives you a grid of input cells and writes the Markdown table for you. Set the number of columns (up to 10) and rows (up to 20), press Build, and type into the cells; the output updates on every keystroke. Header cells you leave empty are filled with Header 1, Header 2 and so on.

The output follows the GitHub Flavored Markdown table format: a header row, a separator row of --- cells and one line per data row, each starting and ending with a pipe. That format renders on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Notion, Obsidian, Jira and most static site generators. The table is built in your browser.

When to use it

  • Writing a comparison or feature table in a README without counting pipes by hand.
  • Documenting configuration options, keyboard shortcuts or API fields.
  • Adding a small results table to an issue or a pull request.
  • Creating a table for a Markdown-based knowledge base or wiki.

Common questions about the Markdown Table Generator

Is there a faster way when the data is already in a spreadsheet?

Yes. Copy the rows as CSV and paste them into the CSV to Markdown Table tool, which converts the whole block at once.

Can I align columns?

Edit the separator row after copying: :--- aligns left, :---: centres and ---: aligns right. The alignment applies to the whole column.

How do I put a line break or a pipe inside a cell?

Markdown tables are one line per row, so use <br> for a line break where HTML is allowed. Escape a pipe as \| so it is not read as a column separator.

Why do the columns not line up in the raw text?

They do not need to. Renderers only look at the pipes, so padding with spaces is optional. It only makes the source easier to read.
