What the Markdown Previewer does

The Markdown Previewer renders Markdown as formatted text while you type. It supports the elements used in most READMEs and notes: headings from # to ######, bold with double asterisks, *italic* with single asterisks, inline code with backticks, fenced code blocks with triple backticks, bullet lists with - or *, and links written as [text](url).

The preview is built for safety: raw HTML in the input is shown as text instead of being executed, and only http, https and mailto links become clickable, so pasted Markdown cannot run a javascript: link. Everything is rendered in your browser. For tables, numbered lists or a downloadable HTML file, use the Markdown to HTML Converter converter.

When to use it

  • Checking a README or a pull request description before posting it.
  • Writing release notes or a changelog entry and seeing the final formatting.
  • Learning Markdown syntax with instant feedback.
  • Checking AI-generated Markdown before pasting it into documentation.

Common questions about the Markdown Previewer

Why are my numbered lists or tables not rendered?

This previewer covers a compact subset of Markdown. Numbered lists, tables, blockquotes and images are shown as plain paragraphs. The Markdown to HTML Converter converter supports the full GitHub Flavored Markdown syntax.

Can I use HTML tags inside the Markdown?

Not here. Tags are displayed as text so that pasted content cannot inject scripts. Many Markdown renderers do allow inline HTML, so it may still work where you publish.

How do I build a table quickly?

Use the Markdown Table Generator to fill in a grid, or the CSV to Markdown Table tool to convert rows copied from a spreadsheet.

What is the difference between one and two asterisks?

One asterisk on each side makes text italic and two make it bold. Underscores work the same way in most renderers, but this previewer uses asterisks only.
