What the Word & Character Counter does
The Word & Character Counter counts your text as you type or paste it. It shows five numbers: words, characters (including spaces), characters without spaces, sentences and paragraphs. Words are groups of characters separated by whitespace, sentences end with ., ! or ?, and paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line.
Counting happens in your browser, so drafts stay private. Character counts matter wherever there is a limit: SEO titles and meta descriptions, social posts, SMS messages, app store listings and form fields. Word counts matter for essays, articles and translation quotes.
When to use it
- Keeping a meta description within 160 characters or a title within 60.
- Checking an essay, an abstract or a cover letter against a word limit.
- Fitting a post within a social network's character limit.
- Estimating translation or copywriting costs that are priced per word.

Why is my count different from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Tools differ on details such as whether e-mail or 3.5 is one word and how they treat line breaks. Differences are usually a few words; this counter splits on whitespace only.
Do line breaks count as characters?
Yes. Each line break counts as one character in the total, and is excluded from the count without spaces, like other whitespace.
How are emoji counted?
Many emoji count as two characters, because JavaScript counts UTF-16 code units. Some platforms, including X (Twitter), use their own weighting, so check the final count there.
Can I count the words of a web page?
Copy the text from the page, or paste its HTML into the HTML Tag Stripper first so tags are not counted, then paste the result here.
