How to convert hexadecimal to binary

Convert hexadecimal numbers to binary instantly: type a value and the binary result appears as you type. Below the converter you'll find the method to do it by hand, a worked example and a table of common values.

  1. Type or paste a hexadecimal number into the box above. Negative numbers and fractions work too.
  2. The From and To bases are already set to hexadecimal and binary, so the result appears right away: 3F becomes 111111.
  3. Copy the result, or choose any other base from 2 to 60 to convert the same value.

Converting hexadecimal to binary by hand

One hexadecimal digit is exactly four binary digits. Split the binary number into groups of four from the right (adding zeros in front if needed) and replace each group with its hex digit, or the other way round:

0011₂ 1111₂ → 3 F
111111₂ = 3F₁₆

Hexadecimal and binary explained

Hexadecimal (hex) is base 16: the digits 0 to 9 plus A to F for the values 10 to 15. One hex digit is exactly four bits, so a byte is always two hex digits, as in colors (#FF8800) and memory addresses.

Binary is base 2: it uses only the digits 0 and 1, and each position is worth twice the one to its right. It is how computers store every number, character and pixel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert negative numbers and fractions?

Yes. Put a minus sign in front of a negative number and use a point for the fraction, for example -12.5. A fraction that never ends in binary is cut off after 32 digits.

How large can the number be?

There is no practical limit. The converter uses exact whole-number arithmetic, so even numbers with hundreds of digits are converted without rounding.

Do uppercase and lowercase letters matter?

Not up to base 36: FF and ff are the same hexadecimal number. From base 37 upward, uppercase and lowercase letters are different digits.
