What the Password Strength Checker does

The Password Strength Checker rates a password from Very Weak to Very Strong as you type and lists what would improve it. It checks the length (8 characters is the minimum, 12 or more scores higher), a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, at least one number, at least one symbol, no character repeated three or more times in a row, and no well-known password such as password, qwerty or 123456.

A password that contains a common password is capped at Weak, however many other rules it meets, because attackers try those first. Very Strong needs every rule, including 12 or more characters. The check runs only in your browser: the password is never sent anywhere, and the Show box lets you see what you typed.

When to use it

  • Checking a password before using it for an important account.
  • Showing users or colleagues why a short password with a symbol is still weak.
  • Designing the password rules for your own sign-up form.
  • Reviewing an old password you still use somewhere.

Common questions about the Password Strength Checker

Is it safe to type my real password here?

The rating is calculated by JavaScript on the page and makes no network request, so the password stays on your device. If you prefer, test a password with the same structure instead of the real one.

Why is Summer2026 only rated Good?

It has no symbol and is only 10 characters long. It also follows a pattern (a word plus a year) that password-cracking tools try early, which is why length and randomness count for more than ticking boxes.

What makes a password truly strong?

Randomness and length. A password from the Password Generator, or four or more unrelated words joined together, beats a clever substitution such as P@ssw0rd.

Does it check whether my password was leaked?

No. It rates the structure only. To check for leaks, use a breach database such as Have I Been Pwned, which checks passwords without receiving them in full.
