Why $75? Israel's VAT exemption on personal imports
When you order goods from abroad for your own use, no VAT is charged if the goods are worth up to $75. Above that, VAT of 18% is charged on the full value of the shipment - the goods plus shipping and insurance, not only the part above $75 - and the courier or Israel Post usually adds a release fee.
Between $75 and $500 there is no customs duty, but VAT applies, and some products also carry purchase tax. Above $500, customs duty may apply as well, depending on the product.
What you pay by shipment value
| Shipment value | What you pay |
|---|---|
| Up to $75 (goods only) | No VAT and no customs duty (except for tobacco and alcohol, which never get the exemption) |
| $75 to $500 | VAT of 18% on goods plus shipping, purchase tax on some products, no customs duty |
| Over $500 | VAT, plus customs duty and purchase tax depending on the product |
What counts toward the $75
- The price of the goods. Shipping and insurance are not counted toward the $75 when they appear separately on the invoice; if the price includes shipping and it cannot be separated, the whole amount counts.
- Once you are over $75, VAT is calculated on everything: the goods, shipping and insurance.
- Several packages from the same seller sent to you within 72 hours are treated as one shipment, so their values add up.
- The limit is in dollars. If you paid in shekels or another currency, customs converts the amount at its own official rate, so leave a margin when you are close to the limit.
Which dollar rate should you use?
This page uses a daily mid-market reference rate (the European Central Bank's rates, via Frankfurter). Customs uses its own official rate, and your card company charges its own rate plus a fee, so the numbers can differ slightly. If your total is close to $75, keep a few dollars of margin.
Tips for staying under the limit
- Check the price of the goods at checkout and make sure shipping is listed as a separate line.
- If the store shows prices in shekels, enter the shekel amount in the calculator above to see it in dollars.
- Splitting one order into several parcels does not help when they count as one shipment - for example, parcels from the same seller within 72 hours.
- Keep the invoice. Customs may ask for it to confirm the value.
Is the limit still $75 in 2026?
Yes, as of our last check (September 2026). In December 2025 the exemption was raised to $150, but the Knesset cancelled that order at the end of February 2026. A second order, which raised the limit to $130, was also cancelled by the Knesset in early June 2026, and the limit went back to $75.
Before a large order, check the current rules with the Israel Tax Authority, for example with its official import tax calculator.

Information last checked: September 2026. This is general information, not tax advice. Rules and rates change, and the amount customs calculates is the one that counts.
Questions about $75 in shekels
How much is 75 dollars in shekels?
It depends on the day's rate: 75 times the dollar rate. For example, at 3.70 ₪ per dollar, $75 is 277.50 ₪. The calculator at the top of this page shows the amount at the current rate.
Does shipping count toward the $75?
Not when it is listed separately: the $75 is checked against the price of the goods. If the price includes shipping and cannot be split, the whole amount counts. Once you are over $75, VAT is charged on the goods plus shipping and insurance.
What happens if I go over the limit by one dollar?
You pay VAT of 18% on the whole value of the shipment - goods plus shipping - not only on the extra dollar. On $76 of goods, for example, VAT on the goods alone is about $13.70, plus 18% of the shipping, and a release fee is usually added.
Is the exemption per order or per package?
It is checked per shipment. Packages from the same seller sent to the same person within 72 hours are treated as one shipment, and their values are added together.
Is there a customs duty exemption up to $500?
Yes. Personal imports up to $500 pay no customs duty, but above $75 you still pay VAT, and some products also carry purchase tax.
Is the VAT exemption still $75?
Yes, as of September 2026. Orders that raised it to $150 and then to $130 were both cancelled by the Knesset, the last one in early June 2026.
